Fukushima – the art of staying with the trouble

Feat. Jason Waite 6th March 2026 1h 10m

Visit to Fukushima nuclear reactor exclusion zone, and discussion with art curator Jason Waite on ‘Don’t Follow the Wind’ art project. Exploring the force of art (like radiation) which is not seen by the general public. ‘Don’t Follow the Wind’ interrogates the nature of nuclear catastrophe with art practices that mirror the duration of the disaster. We explore the history of extraction and colonisation of the Fukushima region and people; as well as the social networks that have emerged to provide mutual aid and re-imagine the infrastructures for living with more-than-human life.

Jason Waite lectures in history of art at St Anne’s College, University of Oxford. See Nikolaus Hirsch & Jason Waite (eds.) ‘Don’t Follow the Wind‘ (Sternberg Press, 2021) for essays and images of the art project.

Participating artists in Don’t Follow the Wind include:

AI WEIWEI, CHIM↑POM, NIKOLAUS HIRSCH & JORGE OTERO-PAILOS, MEIRO KOIZUMI, EVA & FRANCO MATTES, GRAND GUIGNOL MIRAI, AIKO MIYANAGA, AHMET ÖĞÜT, TREVOR PAGLEN, TARYN SIMON, NOBUAKI TAKEKAWA, and KOTA TAKEUCHI.
